Kawanishi is located in the southeast part of Hyogo prefecture.
The neighbors include Ikeda and Minoh of Osaka prefecture to the east, Takarazuka and the town of Inagawa to the west, and the town of Nose, Toyono on the north.
It is narrow east to west and long north to south.
The north side of the city is somewhat mountainous and part of this area has been designated as a part of Hyogo Prefectural Hitokura Park.
The southern part is generally flat and the center of the city can be found here.

Symbols

City Emblem

The emblem design is based on the Kanji letters for "river" (kawa) and "west" (nishi), from Kawanishi and the Inagawa River that runs through the city. The shape over the mark is a rounded "nishi", describing peace and harmony.

City Flower

The "Gentian" was recognized in January of 1968. The gentian was chosen by the citizens because the Genji clan, who developed the western part of Japan, used a type of gentian as a symbol on their flags.

City Tree

CHERRY　The cherry tree was chosen as the official tree in January of 1968 for two reasons; there are vast numbers at famous and historic sites in the city, and also because the pink blossoms color the mountains in spring and bring great joy to the citizens in Kawanishi.

History

1954

Kawanishi Town, Tada Village and Higashitani Village were amalgamated into city of Kawanishi, The population was 33,741.

1957

The first city hall was completed. (Oct.)

1968

City Flower, Gentian (autumn bell flower) and City Tree, Cherry Tree were recognized.

1990

We established a sister city relationship with Sawara City, Chiba Prefecture. (current Katori City)

1991

The Central Library was opened.

1992

The city hall was reconstructed.
We established a sister city relationship with Bowling Green, Kentucky, U.S.A.

1995

The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake attacked.
The city head office of measures for the earthquake was set up.

1997

The city official website was established.

2000

Sister Cities Library Exchange was started.
Books from Bowling Green are placed in Kawanishi Public Library.

Industry and Economy

Kawanishi which has been developing as the residential city is blessed with the greenery and nature. Many citizens commute to Osaka or Kobe. Around Kawanishi-Noseguchi in the central part, we are developing areas, such as public transportation, road and town. We are trying to change to the Human Network City.

Sightseeing and Culture

Kawanishi city has many historical places. 
Tada Shrine in the middle area is famous as the original site of Genji clan, which is a famous samurai clan.
Kamo, Sakane ruins in the south tell us how ancient people lived. The big building surrounded by the square section was discovered at the Kamo ruins in the Kinki area for the first time. It is the oldest one in Japan. 

A lot of people visit Hyogo Prefectural Hitokura Park in the north area near the Hitokura Dam.
