Fig
the Birth place of the present Figs

Kawanishi is well-known as fig production place to all over Japan.
The history of the figs in Kawanishi is that, Mr. Mitujiro Masui from Hiroshima brought a species of figs called "Dorphin" (the origin is in North America) from France and he started to raise them with his friend Mr. Tomokichi Maekawa in Kawanishi. It was successful. They bred "Masui Dorphin" and it spread to Kobe, Wakayama and Aichi.

At present, the annual output in Kawanishi is about 600 tons, that is the most in Hyogo Prefecture. They have a great reputation for mellow and fresh figs picked in morning. These are produced at about 150 farms, about 22 hectors, about 54 acres, mainly in the southern parts of the city, Kushiro, Higashikushiro, Kamo, Sakane, Obe, Dezaike and Hagihara.
The exhibition and spot sale is opened in every August.
