Charcoal

Charcoals have been produced in Kurokawa, the most northern part of the city since the Muromachi era (700 years ago). For a Kunugi, a kind of oak which is material for burning charcoals, can be obtained easily there. There were 40 farm families burning charcoals at the peak period, but the number has decreased and now 3 families keep the traditional skill of it.
The material of charcoals is young oak from 8 to 10 years old. These charcoals are called chrysanthymam charcoals, as the section of them looks like the chrysanthymam flower. Their strong points are quick to catch fire, good to keep fire, and hard to put out. They are forwarded nationwide for use at tea ceremony through the wholesale stores in Keihanshin area. The charcoals are made from December to May.
